RIGHT TO REPAIR

Know your rights when it comes to vehicle repair and maintenance.

Did you know?
  • You are not required to take your vehicle to the dealer in order to maintain your warranty.
  • A warranty cannot require the use of a specific brand of replacement parts offered by your selling dealer.

No matter the brand of vehicle you drive - foreign or domestic - we can help protect you and your vehicle's warranty. By using quality auto parts and service, our skilled technicians can perform all of your vehicle's maintenance and repairs without voiding your warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions By Owners Of New Or Leased Vehicles

Q

Do I have to use the manufacturer's original equipment parts to keep my warranty valid?

A

Legally, automakers cannot specify which parts are used to complete your vehicle's service. You may use any brand-name quality parts to replace fan belts, hoses, brakes, exhaust or chassis parts and more.

Q

What do I have to do to keep my car or truck's warranty in effect?

A

Make sure your vehicle is serviced at the intervals specified in your owner's manual or warranty booklet and keep clear records of your vehicle's maintenance. Be sure to have the date, parts installed, vehicle identification number and mileage recorded on the invoice. Keep these receipts in a safe place. If you have a service log in your owner's manual or warranty booklet, use it.

Q

My car is a leased vehicle. Am I responsible for maintenance?

A

Even if you lease a vehicle you are responsible for all maintenance and repairs to keep the vehicle in good working order as outlined in the owner's manual.

Q

What parts should be replaced and at what intervals should these services be performed?

A

Check your owner's manual. It will give you all of the information you need regarding specific parts and service intervals. Make sure to read it thoroughly and note any exceptions or severe service notations. Warranties are there to protect the consumer, but you must follow the requirements.

Q

What if my new car needs repairs other than regularly scheduled maintenance such as a brake job or other repairs? Do I have to return to the dealer for these repairs? What if these repairs are covered under my warranty?

A

The choice of where to have your car serviced and repaired is yours. However, you will probably have to take the car back to the dealer for any repairs covered under warranty. Thoroughly check your warranty to be certain which repairs are covered.

Q

How does the quality of aftermarket parts compare with original equipment parts?

A

Some are manufactured by the same supplier and may even be warranted longer than original equipment parts. Our aftermarket parts meet or exceed manufacturers' specifications.

Q

If I do have a warranty-related problem with a dealership, what rights do I have?

A

If you have a problem, contact the customer service department of the car manufacturer and ask for assistance. They are concerned with customer satisfaction and may be able to help.

Wish I'd found Jim's Automotive years ago. Richard took the time to discuss my car's rough idle problem in great detail with me over the phone! THAT is the key to a relationship with a trusted mechanic. I learned about my vehicle in an honest way and was treated with kindness and respect. Thank you, Richard!

My husband and I brought in our Chevy Equinox in late March. We exchanged emails with Richard and he was very quick to get back to us and schedule an appointment. Our car was serviced the morning we dropped it off and we were able to pick it up by mid-afternoon. We knew that the work was expensive and that the required services were unavoidable. When comparing prices, we felt very comfortable with Jim's Automotive. Richard and Jim (not the namesake) explained everything in vivid detail, asked if we were comfortable with the charges and even showed us the rusty parts which were replaced. Having relocated to the area, we feel very fortunate to have found a automotive shop that we can trust. Thank you, Jim's, for a very positive and easy-going experience.

So friendly, honest and fast!!! My Elantra didn't pass inspection at the dealership and they were going to charge me over $900 for the exhaust. That was more than I had to spend in a 7 year old car all at once. I called Jim's and was offered an appointment the next day. They looked at it, told us it would be around $650 to fix it and possibly a few days to find the part. I don't know where they found the part but my car was fixed the next day and it was only $600. What a great experience:) I will only take my car here from now on!!!

Have had my vehicle in a couple times and have been very pleased with the service provided. No hidden costs or shady extras. Straight forward and helpful. I wish there were more shops with the integrity of Rich, Danny and Jim.
